There is a serious risk of fire and explosion if lithium batteries enter the used lead battery collection and recycling process
ILA in partnership with EUROBAT, the Association of Battery Recyclers (ABR), Battery Council International (BCI) and individual companies, has therefore developed a lithium battery safety leaflet, which has been pubished in 17 languages.
The leaflet is targeted at battery collectors, sorters and handlers to educate and encourage them to remove lithium batteries from spent batteries sent to lead battery recyclers.
The partnership's longer term strategy involves improved battery labelling/identification through the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). ILA also plans to write to producers of lithium-ion starter batteries to highlight the safety issue at end-of-life, if these products are not collected and recycled appropriately.
