In Europe lead batteries will help charge a low carbon future

With elections around the corner, Europe is not just facing one year of political upheaval, but decades of significant transformation as it grapples with the challenges posed by decarbonisation. Its ambitious vision for 2050 of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95% will require massive policy change. Greater electrification, as we reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, will lead to a surge in demand for rechargeable energy storage. To meet that demand Europe will need a vast range of advanced battery technologies now and in the future. One size will definitely not fit all. Advanced lead batteries, a technology which we already rely on in our everyday lives, will play an ever more critical role in the energy storage map of the future. From frequency regulation for the grid to powering remote communities, advanced lead batteries are already playing an essential function across Europe for renewable energy storage.

The industry, already a successful home-grown value chain in Europe, is investing in the latest research and innovation as it develops the next generation of high performing, sustainable batteries. And it’s only lead batteries that can already boast a near 100 per cent record of collection and recycling, as part of a highly efficient and successful European network. The EU has, latterly, embraced the importance of battery technologies as part of the solution to its energy transformation. With the election of a new parliament this year and a resulting new mandate for the European Commission, it has to ensure all battery technologies are nurtured and supported if it wants to charge the future and achieve its climate change targets. Lead batteries can and will play an essential role in Europe’s low carbon future. And the industry is ready to work hand-in-hand with the EU to achieve its important and challenging goals.
