Bringing together the lead value chain

Highlighting the global value of lead and lead-based products

Evidence-based research and analysis

A united voice for the lead industry

From mining to manufacturing and recycling: protecting people and the environment

01 / 05
As an association we bring together the entire lead value chain supporting the ongoing development of our industries. We help demonstrate and explain just how significant our member companies are to delivering a low carbon future, driving forward innovation and supporting long-term growth. And we do that with the co-operation and support of our members in an industry alliance, working together to achieve our common purpose.
Florian von Steinkeller Chairman, ILA

Leadership

We engage with a wide range of decision-makers and legislators around the world, demonstrating the importance and value of lead and lead-based products.

As the trusted voice of the industry we reinforce the key role of lead in the global economy through advocacy and engagement, promoting proportionate legislation and regulation in discussion with policymakers.

In Europe, North America and around the world we work closely with legislators and policy officials to help build awareness of the essential role of lead batteries in delivering a low carbon future.

In Europe we support EUROBAT’s Charge the Future initiative, focusing on decision-makers in the European Parliament, European Commission and Member States.

Innovation

Maintaining cutting-edge research and innovation is key to making the next generation of advanced lead batteries.

Through the Consortium for Battery Innovation, supported by ILA, we commission pre-competitive research taking batteries to new levels of performance. CBI supports members across the globe to develop technological breakthroughs.

Consortium for Battery Innovation

A responsible industry

Ensuring that lead metal and the products we support are produced and handled safely at all stages – from mining and manufacturing to recycling – is core to ILA’s mission. Our members are committed to guiding principles designed to ensure the highest standards of health and environmental protection for employees and the communities they serve. The standards set in Europe and the US act as the benchmark for other regions.

The science of lead

Our work is evidenced-based, and ILA’s team of experienced scientists are experts in understanding the impact of lead on health and in our environment. Our detailed work underpins fact-based advice and analysis, supporting sound decision-making as well as continuous improvement of the safe and secure manufacturing and recycling of lead and lead batteries. Our programme of work encompasses a wide range of scientific studies relevant to all aspects of lead management.

Safer chemicals management

Protecting the environment, communities and employees is fundamental to all aspects of lead mining and production. Important products key to achieving a low carbon future rely on  substances which, if not handled correctly, could be hazardous. That’s why we adhere to and promote the highest standards of safety and support proportionate risk management measures. And we do so through our Lead REACH Consortium, working with industries who rely on lead. For many consortium members lead matters because it is a vital component in products supporting everything from aviation and space travel to wind farms and machining.

The global lead battery conference

We co-ordinate and manage one of the world’s major lead battery conferences, ELBC: the European Lead Battery Conference.

This biennial global event brings together lead battery manufacturers, lead producers, suppliers and technical experts to discuss and review the latest research and innovation, as well as market trends and key issues affecting the industry.

An industry working together

ILA excels in bringing the entire lead value chain together, to work coherently towards common goals.

We achieve this through close co-operation with partner associations in Europe, North America and other regions including south-east Asia and South America. We stimulate new partnerships and a better understanding of our industry among key decision-makers and legislators. We also help drive the commitment to achieving the highest standards of material stewardship.
