The people behind ILA

Our teams

Our expert teams include scientists, regulatory affairs and communications specialists who support the lead industry’s work worldwide. From battery research, to environmental and health analysis, and from regulatory advice to advocacy, ILA’s staff bring a breadth of experience and knowledge supporting the lead industry’s interests.

Management

The ILA’s global leadership team, under the direction of Dr Andy Bush, co-ordinate and manage the full spectrum of the association’s work programme, liaising closely with members and partner organisations.

Managing Director

Dr Andy Bush

Andy Bush became Managing Director of ILA in 2011. Since then he has led the global restructuring of several lead industry organisations, including the creation of the Consortium for Battery Innovation, co-ordinating strategies to promote and protect the interests of the lead industry worldwide. He joined the ILA in 1997.

Chairman

Florian von Steinkeller

Florian von Steinkeller is Managing Director of Britannia Refined Metals Ltd, part of the Glencore group, which owns and operates the largest lead-producing plant in Europe with a capacity to refine more than 180,000 tonnes of lead. He has been ILA’s chairman since 2015.

Battery expertise

Conducting research into the next generation of lead batteries, the team working under Director of the ILA-supported Consortium for Battery Innovation are at the forefront of new technology development.

Director, Consortium for Battery Innovation

Dr Alistair Davidson

Alistair Davidson is Director of CBI, managing all the consortium’s work programs. Alistair attended the University of Oxford and obtained a PhD at the University of Edinburgh. He has lectured at both Washington State University, US and the University of Chongqing, China.

Dr Matthew Raiford

Matthew Raiford earned his BSc in Chemistry from Texas A&M University in 2009 and his PhD in Chemistry from University of Texas at Austin in 2014. His current projects include improving dynamic charge acceptance and cycle life in lead batteries working with national laboratories in the US, universities, and the global lead battery industry.

Research and Innovation Manager, Consortium for Battery Innovation

Dr Carl Telford

Carl Telford has over 20 years experience in strategic research, consulting, and R&D. An expert in futures thinking, roadmapping, and facilitation. In his career to date, Carl has helped major public and private organisations across the world develop strategies, with particular experience in the automotive, off-highway, energy and infrastructure, and chemicals and materials sectors. His academic background includes a PhD in materials engineering.

Technical Manager, Consortium for Battery Innovation

Dr Begüm Bozkaya

Begüm Bozkaya received her BSc degree in Chemistry from Middle East Technical University and her MSc degree in Materials Science from the Technical University of Munich. Afterwards, she joined in the group of Fraunhofer R&D Centre for Electromobility at Fraunhofer ISC. She has worked on several industrial projects for which she mainly focused on the enhancement of dynamic charge acceptance.

Senior Communications Manager

Lara Wilson

Lara Wilson has a diverse background in communications, public relations, marketing, and events over a wide variety of industries including environment, real estate & construction, government, military & defense, science, and technology. She holds a Master of Science in Environmental Management from the University of Maryland University College and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Research & Innovation Manager

Dr. Athanasia-Maria Tompolidi

Athanasia-Maria Tompolidi holds a BSc from National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She holds a PhD on mineral mapping by using machine learning (ML) for satellite image analysis from Harokopio University of Athens (HUA) in collaboration with the Research Institute of IAASARS/NOA. She has six years of experience on project management of national and European funding projects as a Project Officer in Horizon Europe Climate of Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) of European Commission (EC).

Senior External Affairs Manager

Nicola Filizola

Nicola Filizola has more than 15 years of experience internationally. In his previous roles at the AAL and the United Nations, he engaged globally with national and local governments, European Institutions, industry, and R&D to advocate for a more inclusive approach to aging, and to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, Nicola also worked for TV and Radio Broadcasters. He speaks fluent English, Spanish, and French, plus Italian (his mother tongue).

Scientific

Ensuring that the science behind the impact of lead in the environment and on health is both robust and definitive underpins the work of ILA’s scientific experts, led by Dr Steve Binks.

Regulatory Affairs Director

Dr Steve Binks

Steve Binks joined ILA as Regulatory Affairs Director in October 2011. He was previously Director of Hazard Assessment & Communication at the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. He is a European-registered toxicologist.

Senior Scientist

Cris Williams

Cris Williams is Senior Scientist – Health at ILA. He has more than 30 years’ experience in subjects including exposure assessment and occupational health. He is a member of the Society of Toxicology and the author or co-author of more than 30 peer-reviewed publications. Dr WIlliams holds a PhD in environmental toxicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Senior Scientist – Environment

M. Jasim Chowdhury, PhD

Jasim Chowdhury is an environmental scientist with more than 20 years’ experience in bioavailability and toxicity of metals in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Based in our North Carolina office, he manages environmental programmes and provides technical expertise on regulatory affairs. He holds a PhD in Environmental Biology.

Regulatory

Wherever the lead industry is regulated ILA’s expert team represent the industry’s interests and support proportionate legislation which protects people and the environment.

Regulatory Affairs Director

Dr Steve Binks

Lisa Allen

Lisa Allen joined ILA as manager of the Lead REACH Consortium in 2016. Previously, she managed regulatory support services at REACHReady Ltd, a subsidiary of the UK Chemical Industries Association. Lisa studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and holds an MA and an MSci in inorganic and physical chemistry.

Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Officer

Lucyna Michalska

Lucy Michalska holds an MSc. in biological chemistry from the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan, Poland. She joined ILA as Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Officer in 2022. Previous to her current role, Lucy worked in academia as an associate researcher in the laboratory of organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic.

Communication and advocacy

Working across the lead and lead battery industries the communications team ensure accurate and consistent information is available about lead and lead-based products. Led by Hywel Jarman, ILA’s communications and advocacy experts work in partnership with associations across the globe.

Director of Communications

Hywel Jarman

Hywel Jarman joined ILA in 2018. He is responsible for ILA’s communications and advocacy programmes. A former journalist he has held senior communications and public affairs roles in the private and public sectors.

Communications Manager

Guido Gonzalez Villa Monte

Guido joined ILA in 2022. He has over 16 years of international experience in Corporate Communications split between in-house and consultancy roles within the UK, Spain, Portugal and Argentina. Previously, Guido worked for a wide range of companies, creating and implementing communications plans across Europe, Middle East, Latin America and Africa regions. He holds a Master’s degree and is fluent in 4 European languages.

Communications Officer

Irene Fuentes

Irene Fuentes graduated from University of Central Lancashire with a BA Honours degree in International Business Communication. She has previously worked in both private and public sectors in Madrid and London. She is a Communications Officer for ILA.

Events and administration

Operations and Events Manager

Maura McDermott

Maura McDermott joined the Zinc and Lead Development Associations in 1988. During her career she has supported the transition between associations into what is today the ILA. Her responsibilities include managing ILA’s London office and organising events including the European lead battery and international lead conferences.

Finance Manager

Dawn Raymond

Dawn Raymond holds a masters degree in business administration, majoring in accounting and finance. She has worked at the ILA’s US office in North Carolina, since February 2009, where she is Finance Manager.

Administrative Assistant

Anita Wright

Anita Wright is Administrative Assistant and Librarian at the International Lead Association, Inc. and Consortium for Battery Innovation based in North Carolina. Anita joined the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (now ILA, Inc.) in November 1994.

Administration Assistant

Louise Matthews

Louise Matthews is part-time Administration Assistant at the International Lead Association. Louise joined the association in 2001.
